Molly's Birthday and Thanksgiving

Hey all,

We really let the pictures build up over the last month or so. But I finally bit the bullet and picked out the best ones to post up. This batch has birthday pics, Mom's visit, Molly's party and Thanksgiving.

new photos from the last few weeks

It's a beautiful snowy morning, and I'm staying inside and posting photos from the last few weeks. Evangeline got a new toy bear and a sweater from Emily, and she's just learning how to play with toys. I really think she just chomped on the bear because it was in the way of getting her hands to her mouth, but she's getting there! :-)

We also went on a walk with the Swintecks, which, of course, she slept through. I guess a warm bunting where she can't move her arms and being carried around by daddy is pretty great!

Happy December!

new Fall photos

Evangeline and her fall visitors

Just had Evangeline's 2 month visit. She weights 10 pounds, 5 ounces, and she's in the 49th percentile for weight and 76th for height. And she has quite a set of lungs on her when given her shots! She did enjoy squirming on the doctor's table, though, since the paper crinkled under her...

A little slice of Seattle...

When you mouse over the comic on the webpage you get the following text in the popup: "no company has ever gone bankrupt expecting customers to put self-interest ahead of principal." Wondermark is always so relevent for the Seattle reader.

Tetris and Mom

Here's what Jason Kapalka, creator of the game, Bejeweled, said about Mom's favorite game, Tetris, in Nov 2008 Wired:

"A timeless classic. Fitting pieces together feeds the same pleasure center of the brain that gets off on packing a suitcase really well or squeezing all your groceries into a single bag."

Truth in Rock

Someone from church asked me to write something for a devotional they plan to distribute this fall. I doubt they'll ask again:

If all truth is God’s truth, we shouldn’t startle or wince when we find it written on the subway walls and tenement halls. We should celebrate rather than scold our Muslim mechanic or pagan plumber or communist co-worker who helps with homework, obeys the law, defers to others, works diligently, and “rejoices in the wife of his youth” (Proverbs 5:18) because he is following the way ordained by God when He created this world. The apostle Paul stated the obvious but troublesome truth that people who disavow God often do the right thing (Romans 2:14), and not as a blind pig finds a truffle but because “God’s divine nature has been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made” (Romans 1:20). Seek the truth and you will find it in some unlikely places, as I have – even under the rock in rock music.

In The Seeker, Pete Townshend sings “I got values but I don’t know how or why.” He may not admit it, but he shares a God-given conscience with you and me, and that raises a lot of questions for The Who, from the band’s name to “Who are you?” to “How can Tommy be saved when he doesn’t know who Jesus was or what praying is?” Some of the questions are hard, and sometimes the seeker, like the wealthy young man who went away sad (Matthew 19:22), can’t stand the answer, but we should encourage the seeker to ask, especially if he can swing a Stratocaster.

Emerson, Lake, & Palmer’s Lucky Man captures the hollowness of life lived without constraints, free of the values God ordained and the seeker sought. He had power, wealth, and “a gold-covered mattress on which he was led,” yet it’s clear from the lyrics and the music that “lucky” is an ironic adjective. “What a lucky man he was” captures the truth that the things we count for precious either burn out or rust (Matthew 6:19 and James 1:11). It reminds me of a modern lucky man, Ted Turner, who at the peak of his success described his life as “an empty bag.” Or of Jackson Browne’s Fountain of Sorrows, in which you hear “that hollow sound of your own steps in flight.”

Not all gold records yield nuggets of truth, even those that sound profound. (Procol Harum’s Whiter Shade of Pale, anyone?) When The Boss samples King James in Thunder Road – faith, crosses, praying, savior, redemption, heaven, Mary, and the promised land elevate his song about street racing – it’s probably just for effect, but affect us it does because we who were born in the USA have inherited the privileges as well as the baggage of Christendom. I count it a privilege that most of us are acquainted with the explicit truth of God thanks to Gutenberg’s Bible and the many Zondervans that followed. But I count as baggage our tendency to dismiss or even deride God’s truth when it falls outside the walls of the church.

Of course, you’ll find lies and half-truths in pop music, too. “All you need is love” is not as true as “the greatest of these is love” (1 Corinthians 13:13). “Love the one you’re with” is a twisted take on Jesus’ command to “love one another” (John 13:34). And it’s no challenge to find songs that celebrate lies – Highway To Hell, Imagine, Only The Good Die Young – but even these can illumine God’s truth, if only from behind (see Matthew 7:13, 2 Peter 2:1, and Jeremiah 12:1 to see the shadow cast).

So love your neighbor as yourself (Mark 12:31). After all, she may be a lot closer to God’s way than I am, whether she knows it or not. Like Kitty in Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, your neighbor may be “unconsciously religious, and good.” And by speaking the truth in love, you earn the right to show your neighbor that the truths you share are from God.

by Matt Huff – I grew up in a bedroom community of New York City, with Cousin Brucie of WABC on the transistor radio under my pillow, and the Gospel according to Saint Matthew on the nightstand. I was named after one of Christendom’s bright lights, a trait I share with many rock stars – Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Peter Paul & Mary, Elton John, and John “more popular than Jesus” Lennon, (compare to his namesake’s claim in Mark 1:7 that “After me will come one whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie”).

I am Iron Man!!!

Any-who...

Liz and I just sat down and watched Iron Man on Blu-Ray with a few friends the other night and I can give it a fairly solid thumbs-up. The term "summer movie" has been pretty overloaded recently but it's generally accepted (genearally accepted by ME) to mean a movie that is fun to watch, will appeal to a group of guys and gals, looks better in the theater or HD and won't be nominated for any major Oscars. Iron Man fits that category pretty well and I'd say it has a shot at being the best Marvel movie adaption yet (note that it competes against X-Men and X-Men 2: United for this award, not against those emo Spiderman flicks).

It's big advantage was casting Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role of Tony Stark. Nothing like having an ex-alcoholic, playboy, millionaire actor portraying an alcoholic, playboy, millionaire superhero. I'd call it an enjoyable B+ with him when it would probably be a C at best without.

In other news Little Big Planet will be out soon starting the Fall game rush. LBP, Fable II, Banjo & Kazooie, Gears of War 2 and probably one other (Mirror's Edge, Fallout 3, Prince of Persia) here I come! Thank goodness for me saving up my games budget and for $25 new games at the company store.

Evangeline's first week

Just got back from a good visit with Laura, Jon, and Evangeline, who was cute, alert, and observant though not yet one week old. Great fun!

new pics

Wendy and David were visiting last weekend, so Janelle and Alex and Tamara and Kevin came down to visit. It was quite the surprise Wheaton reunion at our new house!
We got a picture of everyone, then one of the three "early fall" babies - Sofia's 2, Talya's 1, and little Baby X is not quite 0. The joke is that although they were all born around this time of year, they are each progressively less Asian, from 100%, to 50%, to 0%.
The last picture is the 4 girls from 1 West freshman year!

There's also a picture of me at 38 weeks, but I'm not sure where the camera cord is right now. As soon as we find it, I'll post it too.

More Pics

I guess guilt trips work on me ;) Here are some more baby pictures. :)

http://picasaweb.google.com/ian.huff/Molly101109#

Wow, i can't believe that it's been almost a year since we were going through what Laura & Jon are going through right now. Good luck guys! You are going to love being parents :)

So Molly is really ticklish in the morning ... when she's done feeding I like to tickle her chin & she makes this laugh/snuffle noise. Sooo cute! I have to admit I miss my free time somedays but I really am loving this mom stuff. :) She's also babbling non-stop right now & she's pulling herself up on everything. The other day we climbed into a basket. :-P Pretty soon she'll be toddling around. Scary!

Hiking Pics!

Hey guys!

So I was talking to Mom this morning & got a gentle reminder that we need to post some more pics of molly. ;) I forgot to put up this link (we took some hiking pics the other weekend & I posted some stuff on my blog). Check it out! :)

a sad house video from our new phones

This is our life!
Other perks would be PS2 (off Ian's recommendation for how to spend time with a child), new phones (fairly obvious at this point : ), and movers scheduled on multiple days.
Here's my office!

Sunday, August 24, 2008

the current state of the condo

Most rooms are filled with boxes. We're trying to clean as we go, so we can leave and be out when the movers leave, but we don't know if that's possible. So we're trying to completely finish rooms and only leave packed/unnecessary stuff behind...

Which means that the wireless router is now in the bathroom. Can't do without our internet!

We'll be in touch soon with new address, phone numbers, etc. We will still have a home phone (we weren't planning on it), but DSL without home phone was just about as expensive as our cheap no-plan local phone plan. We're getting two cell phones but switching to AT&T. Jon will have our current cell number, and I'll update you on mine and the home number in a few days.

We took pictures of the new house at tonight's inspection. Check them out! We're planning on moving on the 28th, so we'll get our new address to you all before then. Also, here's me at 33 weeks (last week). And I was about to blow dry my hair...I just hadn't gotten to it at that point!

JPO :)

Hey guys!
So I know this is kinda little news but my paper just got accepted for publication in JPO (Journal of Prosthetics & Orthotics). It's just a tiny little tech note but I'm the first author on it & it got accepted on the first try! Well they lost my initial submission but they accepted the submission right after that. I've never seen something accepted on the first go around so I'm pretty excited. :) I've been published before but never as a first author. The Thermal stuff was kinda my pet project at work & it's exciting to see some fruit finally come out of it. I left 3 other papers partially done when I left so we'll see if we have the same luck w/ those getting published (my boss still has a lot of work to do on them ... I just gathered the data & helped write up parts of it ... not first author on those papers). That's it. I know it's little but I wanted to share my good news. :)

Prince of persia

No blogging for quite a while ehhhh?

Since Jon was mentioning Prince of Persia being the only video game that he plays I thought I would post up a link to the E3 trailer for the new Prince of Persia game. The soundtrack they picked was nice I think it's one of the better video game trailers that I've ever seen.

http://www.gamersyde.com/news_6826_en.html

Just download one of the high-res version from the E3: Trailer section on the above link. The artwork is way too pretty to waste on a streaming version.

Today I finally turned 1,000

Okay, so it was 2 days ago, sue me!

My website climbed over the 1,000 page views this week primarily due to my Rackham content. It's been up for a little under six months, and while I'd love a more interactive format (without the content requirements of a blog or being bludgeoned by web-quizzes at a social networking site) it's been great to have somewhere to point friends of various ilks to get more info about my hobbies. As content (slowly) grows, I'm realizing more traffic - which is good as some of this is merely about a conservation effort for an out of print game edition. Unique visits is just a little under 500 according to Google analytics and hopefully doubling that by years end will be attainable.

In other news, I think I've finally broken the terrifying grasp that Alanys Morrisette (sp?) had on my conception of IRONY this morning. Here's where I work. Take a look.

Stuff Ian wants to do at home

In no particular order:
  • Swim
  • Play guitar with Jon (if I can track a guitar down somehow)
  • Dip Molly's toes in the lake
  • Whiffle Ball Golf in the yard
  • Wakeboard
  • Get a night out with Liz
  • Stay up late
  • Sleep in
  • Watch Molly inchworm along and find new stuff to cram into her mouth
  • Cream my folks at Raquetball / Tennis
  • Read (not sure what, almost done with Heart Of Darkness and need a new book)
  • Eat 75% of meals outside
  • Have a thunderstorm (note that this might not be possible :-))
  • House Party
  • Get Bop and Gram a chance to see Molly

I'm sure there are more, but that is my list for now. Getting excited about getting home :-). I need a vacation.

25 weeks and counting...

Here's yesterday's photo - 25 weeks! She only kicks me on the right side, so I think she's not doing cartwheels in there...just exercising her kick boxing skillz!

Also, movies to avoid - we just rented The Golden Compass, and it was terrible. We were hoping it would at least offer a fun memory of the book, but it really didn't. The story had no life to it, and the movie just plodded along, adding events and plot points like it had to, but not as if they actually meant anything. The acting wasn't bad, but the movie itself seemed to have no idea it was actually supposed to be telling a story.

Too bad!

We've also been eating lots of strawberry rhubarb pie, from lots of different places. I love strawberry rhubarb pie, so I'm pretty satisfied with June at this point!

Jon's going to make an awesome dad

Hey so I just finished laying Molly down for a nap. She's gotten increasingly difficult about the diaper change (doesn't understand why she's not allowed to roll around in her poop, crazy kid). :-P Anyways to keep her distracted I usually sing to her & today I was singing about how it was nap time & we had to change her diaper so she didn't get butt rash & we sang goodbye to the wet diaper & hello to the dry diaper. Anyways as I'm singing to my kid & realizing how incredibly untalented I am at the whole song writing thing I thought about you Jon. You are going to have so much fun making up silly songs for your kid. I hope that you record some of your parenting songs. Can't wait to hear them. :)

Mom's visit

I'd say more in this post but work was pretty busy today so I'm basically just going to throw the pictures up. Had lots of fun with Mom on her visit and took lots of picture. Thanks so much for getting that glass figured out for us Dad (I'll add a picture of it later). Sophia is currently in town so we'll be seeing her tonight.

Geneva 2008

If this album looks like deja vu all over again, that's because this was my third visit to the trade show in Geneva, and I've probably posted pictures of that town on the blog before. But the pictures are new, even of the town is old and a little repetitious.

larsen bebe

Our ultrasound pictures of our little baby. Don't worry, we were already talking with the ultrasound lady about the importance of getting her tiny little Bears outfits. So it's a girl, but we definitely have our priorities in the right place!

Looks like the foot is just her showing off already. She's got a lot of space to stretch out in there, I guess, and she's making use of it.

And...me at 21 weeks. We're taking a photo each month at the doctor's appointment, so that's why you'll see me so much!

a few project pics

My two new projects:

The first is the maternity dress I finished this weekend. I also bought a black/white/yellow swirly print fabric that I will use to make a similar style dress. It's a cross-front dress, which was pretty simple, but the pattern pieces looked all crazy before it went together. And the new machine worked great on the stretch fabric!

Then, I finally finished the pacifier holder I was making for my friend Laura. But I already sent her gift, so I may just keep it. We'll see! Liz will recognize it from the Itty-Bity Nursery book...

So Guess Who Is Teething!

Yeah, it's Molly who is teething, not Liz or I. I actually took a picture of her when she was all sad, but to be honest it's so heartbreaking that I couldn't bring myself to post it on the blog. So instead here is a cute picture of Ian and Molly showing off their blue eyes. Plus we've not had a video in a while so I uploaded a few more to show off.

Laura's belly...also, what she's putting in it!

Here, this is a bit more of a belly! At 17 weeks, I feel like I got twice as big in about 4 days. So now everyone at work thinks my belly's really cute...

I got out of having to work today, although most of the shop does. But I do have lots of editing to do all weekend (I have three manuscripts at the moment), so I'll be busy. We also need to choose more places for our next house-hunting excursion!

Also, here's our current favorite breakfast (in fact, we're eating it right now):

Four-Grain Flapjacks (from Joy of Cooking)

combine dry:
1 cup whole-wheat flour
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup cornmeal (I like a little more)
1/4 cup oats (I like a little more)
2 T sugar
1 t salt
2 t baking powder
1/2 t baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional, but I like)
pinch of nutmeg

Whisk wet in a smaller bowl:
1 3/4 cups milk
4 T butter, melted (you can use less, although they don't stick to the pan at all so you don't add any extra at that end!)
1/4 cup honey
3 large eggs

Pour wet over dry and mix just until combined. Griddle 'em. Also good with cut-up bananas and, if you're feeling really decadent, butterscotch chips.

Signs--

Well, it looks like I've managed to grab the elusive 100th post.

Laura told me (several weeks ago) that she went into a Post Office and their automatic postage machine was broken--but, wouldn't you know it, the workers refused to put up a sign. I mused on this a little last night as I passed a sign that read "Suburbs - Exit Only".

What she didn't know was that sometimes a sign is the LEAST helpful thing of all.

Crazy Signs

In the midst of all our house hunting, a little humor for you!

And more a slide-show you can send around work.

New Pics!

Hey guys!

So we've finally uploaded some of the Molly pics. We have some goofy spoofs coming up soon once we have time to play w/ paint.net (intrigued aren't you?). ;)

We also have a few videos to upload soon but I think I hear my baby waking up so I will cut this short. She's such a happy baby. I love going to pick her up from a nap. She just wakes up & chats to herself until I show up. Then she throws out her arms, kicks out her feet & gives me a happy squeal b/c she's so glad to see her Mommy (and did I mention the huge toothless grin?). I'm off to play w/ my adorable baby! (yes yes I know I have the best life ... jealous aren't you?)

Obsessions come home to roost!

Okay, so I had some fabulous Lad Nar (also known as Lard Nar - among other things) perhaps less than two months ago as I had lunch with a service vendor.

It was AMAZING! Since, I've spent a fairly considerable time thinking about that experience and hoping to recreate it. I've had it out since (past Saturday - also yum), and made it in (super not good yuck). I've googled my heart out trying to find some inside info on this.

It's part of the whole pan-asian lock-down. Does anyone make Fried Rice, General Tsao's chicken, etc, like they do at a Chinese take-out? I sure don't. Well, today I googled Lad Nar recipe again and met a very different result. I actually SAW someone making this dish. Hopefully now I'll be able to break into the inner sanctum of this delicious entree.

Let's see if I can embed this video here--

April-o

A couple late wintery pictures - from March, I think! And my belly - that's from last week. I actually think it's a lot bigger this week (week 15 now) but I can't take pictures all the time! Still wearing most of my pants, some with rubber bands on the button, though. I can fit some skirts, but I wore one to work the other day that was comfy until after I ate lunch, and then I could barely sit down. Ugh...

Springtime hugs and kisses to everyone!

Pics from Mom W's visit and Babyrobics

Hey guys! So we put some more pictures online.

http://picasaweb.google.com/ian.huff/Molly32908

The majority of them are from my mom's visit. (I have some more pics on the camera that I need to download. Most of these were taken when we got back from our night away). Mom was so happy that things went smoothly w/ the baby so I had to record this momentous occasion (Molly's first night away from the parents!). I guess Molly got a little ticked at Mom for waking her up from her nap (we told her that we usually wake her up if she sleeps longer then 2 hours). Poor Mom was so traumatized that she refused to wake up Molly for the remainder of her visit. However after that Molly was a little angel. She did figure out how to wrap grandma around her little finger. The little con artist has figured out how to hold her arms out beseechingly when you lay her down to go to sleep. We can resist this plea but it turned out to be too much for grandma. Needless to say our baby was held a lot. :) Mom H we can't wait for you to come out. Molly is turning into an adorable little person! It's so much fun to see what she'll do next. You're going to have a blast in May.

The rest of the pictures are from my Babyrobics class. Molly is dressed her in fashionable leg warmers & her geeky onsie from Uncle Jon & Aunt Laura (I was running late that day & I couldn't find matching leg warmers so she's a little mismatched ... ah well!) Enjoy the pics! Hey soon we'll have the Larsen's baby pics on the blog too. So excited guys! :)

So I stole it

Just one of the many reasons why I loathe SUVs. They are TOO TALL!

Is that enough Os & Ts to emphasize my point there, toto?

I’m not in the Wizard of Oz, or any other fictional setting, I’m just driving down a normal street. People have been doing this a lot to me lately—swerving out of the way of stuff. I almost rear-ended some dude on Lakeshore getting out of the way of a black-plastic bag. I guess it LOOKED solid. Then a lady swerved around a ball. People will swerve around pretty much everything.

Maybe they know something I don’t. Or should I say “DIDN’T” until today.

Because when that SUV swerved into the next lane, and I calmly drove straight forward (really I had little choice, I follow pretty close, and since that’s pretty much the norm around here, openings into the other lane are just as disappointingly infrequent as holes in that cheap swiss cheese they’re always forlornly pimping at the deli counter). Anyway, I drove straight forward into a construction cone. A construction cone! What a misnomer!! I mean, we were in the general vicinity of a Pepsi truck. Unless they're literally building a soft-drink empire, I don't see how we can call this a construction cone.

So, while I can’t fathom how exactly that cone got into my lane (or why the Pepsi people were too lazy to pick it up…), I sure hit it.

And I had this vague idea that it would, like, rebound off my bumper ala a cattle-catcher and just tumble harmlessly into the gutter. NOPE. As any of you who’ve had the sadistic urge to maul a bright orange cone will know, they LODGE up in your WHEEL WELL.

See, the top of a cone is all soft and inviting. And the BOTTOM of a cone is a reinforced, stiff, ugly, cantankerous thing.

What’s great about having a cone in your wheel well is that suddenly you’re the center of attention. I mean, probably only 2 cars saw me run over that cone. But EVERYONE in a 6 block radius HEARD me do it.

That cone. That cone in the wheel well? Well, that wheel turns man. And just like a record makes noise, my axle played that cone for all it was worth. I even kept at it for a couple blocks (under the impression that I’m just dragging the thing under my car and driving over some pot-holes (see, I’m still looking for a bright-side to these things)) thinking that I could dislodge it.

A cone in your wheel well is like an emergency brake on steroids. It’s a great big Barry Bonds type emergency brake and it smells like one too. So, I pulled over into a Wendy’s. They have a tasty frosty I thought. Then I parked it and backed up. Still hopeful, see. Nope—NO CONE came out from under my car!? So I re-parked it and discovered the wheel well thing. Makes sense really.

Again, that bottom part of the cone is like a two inch thick piece of cartilage or something. I’ve independently discovered the same urge that makes people want to eat shark-fin soup. Anger.

Trying to bend that thing was like trying to launch a catapult with your bare hands. The last time I was tested on spatial perception might have been fifth grade, but the first time I used that particular skill was today. I bent, pulled, grunted, tugged, rotated, and spit on that thing until I finally figured out how to get it into an orientation that would just allow me to get the hell back on the road and get to work. I tell you, I am now going to swerve. From now on!

Some of you higher-minded types might have driven back there to return it to the Pepsi guys. Some of you lower-minded types might have been tempted to…and give ‘em something all right. Not me. I put it in the trunk.

Wanna buy a condo?

Here's the link to our condo pictures and virtual tours. Ooh, check out how clean and sparkling everything is... And it's still pretty easy to keep everything clean, especially since we can stow the laptop and hard drive under the table.

Thanks, mom! Thanks, dad!

Capo-rific

Two songs - both using capo (to accommodate my non-rock-star register), are up on my site.

It appears as though my 'braver 5 minutes' are nearly half-way over. More on the way, and I hope you like.

In which: Jon writes

Firefox's annoying penchant of ignoring zeros placed in the "autostart=" entry is a bit annoying, so I will simply be linking here--

Laura helped me write a song, suggesting replacements for hard to pronounce words (horticulturist became botanist, thanks babe!), and she even scrolled through the lyrics for me as I sang along (since our ink cartridge is again dry on our printer).

Long story short, I wrote a song and here's the rough draft.

Re-recording will likely happen once my guitar repertoire increases. Although it would also be nice to record after I've had more than two play-throughs! So, it's still pretty rough--but at least I got it out of my system...whew!

Or, you can download it to your computer HERE

Hope you like!

So Fashionable!

So today Molly & I were late to our gym class. It was hilarious. B/c the moms didn't get to see her outfit at the beginning of class when we were warming up they made a point to drop by our mat as class was ending. I've been dressing Molly is her funny onesies ("All your toys are belong to us" was a huge hit last week). Also she's been in her fashionable baby leg warmers. So the moms wanted to see what fun outfit she was wearing today. Even the instructer made a point to come check her out. What can I say ... our daughter is oh so fashionable. ;)

One more cool thing ... it sounds like the instructor might organize a non-official stroller workout on Monday mornings. She doesn't think the Pro club has enough options for us moms so she wants to just get together as friends & do a non-Pro club sponsered workout (she's going to bring her 3 year old). I'm really enjoying getting to work out w/ my baby. So much fun! Today one of the older babies was clapping along w/ the music while we all worked out. I started cracking up watching him that I forgot to keep up w/ the class. :-P

Okay Molly is napping so I'd better get dinner started (we have 22 people singed up for tonight & I know that people are coming who haven't signed up ... yikes!).

Steampunk; technology + romance?

This is what we get for tolerating Mac users!

Actually, I really like this. What a radical construction.

Reminds me of a few months ago when I was researching bows. There's all these folks who say it just doesn't have SOUL unless it's hand-made w/natural materials. On the other hand, I think the experience of stalking through the woods might just possibly be enhanced by knowing that you can rely on your fiberglass to not get wet and warp into an arrangement that will break on your next shot--lodging one of the limbs in your eye and causing the string to gash open your forearm.

But, aesthetics... Fascinating what arises out of creativity devoid of necessity.

That is one RADICAL computer!

Such a Seattleite

So I learned last week that Molly is even more of a Seattle baby then I thought. Not only does she (1.) wear cloth diapers (such an eco friendly baby!), (2.) listen to Indie lullaby music (thanks Auntie Laura & Uncle Jon!), (3.) wear organic cotton clothes (she got a few gifts from our hippy friends), and (4.) have geek t shirts, she also uses the #1 stroller prefered by Greenlake babies. I felt so trendy the other day. I met up w/ my old coworkers for brunch & then a walk around Greenlake. Seriously I have never seen so many BOB strollers in one place. I think I saw every style & color option at least once. We passed at least three groups of friends using multiple BOB strollers. We even saw a few of the double strollers. My friends were teasing me about being so trendy. Thanks again Mom & Dad for the stroller. I have to say my friends gave me some envious glances when I pulled it out of my trunk.

Oh, also I guess Mom was asking E about the face book. So we definitely read it to Molly but she doesn't quite get the concept of books yet. It's hillarious. Sometimes she'll sit & listen to us read to her & she likes to grab onto the pages. However a lot of the time she thinks she's being ignored. She doesn't quite get that she's being read to. She just knows that Mom & Dad aren't paying attention to her at that exact moment. Such a little dictator! I know that it was totally a coincidence but we had a funny thing happen late last week. I was reading the face book to her & when we got to the picture of Jon w/ the long bleach hair she started bawling! I think she was just tired but man she acted like she was terrified of that scary looking man. Jon I guess you can't grow your hair out before July. ;)

Molly's napping so Mommy & Daddy are going to return to their Settlers game. Thanks again Laura & Jon. We're really enjoying the card game! :)

Our Mexico place

Since Dad and Mom were asking where our honeymoon place was in Puerto Vallarta I figured that I would drop the link to it quick (the link has a map about halfway down). Fun pictures from the trip guys, I'd love to get back there sometime. At the rate the Huff / Moore / Larsen / Fuller families are growing we could probably rent out the entire Majahuitas resort in just a few years from now for another reunion :-).

P.S. If you look at the "see more pictures section" the image majahuitas12.jpg shows the cabin that Liz and I stayed in.

Nuevo Vallarta

You probably don't need to see 8 pictures of whales' tails, but they say that each one is distinctive, and I've included the evidence in the linked album. I got a little carried away with my camera again, but I can't resist. Actually, the bike trip pics (and a few others) were taken with a $5 disposable, which was a good call -- I could barely get myself to the top of some of the hills we biked, and I was sure glad I wasn't packin' a serious camera. You may have heard how the mountain biking bruised Mom's bum (right cheek only), and I included evidence in the photo of her tail; you might not notice it if I didn't call it to your attention because the bruises blend so well with her polka-dot bikini.

our little jelly bean

I realize it looks just like the one Ian and Liz put up, hmm...a year or so ago now. But here's our little embryo at the moment (well, exactly 1 week ago). In real life you could see its tiny heart beating really fast, but in the picture there's not much to see yet!

Bao - ow!

Laura sure is saying Bao a lot these days!!

We really did love 'Once', here's a song I recorded tonight - you get the idea.

Falling Slowly, originally by Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova

It and some other things have been put up at my website too. In case the embedded audio doesn't work...LINK

life in Chicago

We've heard it's cold here, but we solved that by not going outside today! We had a fun homemade "Indian buffet" with friends last night, and we were out shopping the rest of the day, so today we're staying in. This afternoon we've been making pork bao - I love bao, but the only other time we made them they didn't rise very well. These ones look fantastic, despite having to overcome some oddities in the recipe (5 cups of water to 2 cups of flour to make dough? 2 hours to double the dough?), and I can't wait to eat them in just a few minutes.

We had some virtual money to spend at our local game store from the last game auction where we got rid of extra stuff, so yesterday we went out there and picked up $156 worth of minis for $6. Yay! One of the ones I got is a chick riding a wolf, which is my current D&D character, so Jon's putting it together for me for our next game in a few weeks.

Just wanted to throw a few movie recommendations out there. We just watched Stardust, which I remember Ian and Liz recommending, and we really enjoyed it as well. Such a fun, well-made, and simple movie. We also just saw Once and think you all should watch it as well, especially those of you who play guitar! It's got a nice homemade non-Hollywood feel to it, and the acting and singing are really enjoyable. Jon's been playing the songs since they've been in our heads.

Hope you all are doing well (those on vacation in Mexico and those not).

Molly pic and a bounty

Awww, look at Molly, isn't she sooooo cute with her little giraffe Alto? But you know what would make her really happy? Her own little knitted Sackboy from the upcoming game Little Big Planet (Check LBP create trailer under "what we're excited about")! Yeah this probably takes mad knitting skillz, but hopefully someone ends up putting a pattern online.

http://www.mediamolecule.com/blog/2008/02/

As a reward Molly will bestow a bounty of love and affection on whoever can make her a little knitted Sackboy!

Que?

Something is odd with the blog?

I was wondering why the post that Laura claims has a link to Jon's webpage doesn't actually have one. So I checked into the post history and it seems that Jon's first post about googlepages isn't showing up on the frontpage for me. For some reason I only see the "Extra Stuff" post. So I was finally able to figure out what ya'll were talking about. Also the comments that I thought that I had made on the extra stuff post seem to show up on the first google pages post when I look at the history. Not quite sure what is going on here.

Cool page Jon. BTW, I'll have to pull down your Hallelujah and add in the electric guitar parts. I had them all down as of some time ago and I'll have to see if I can still remember them.

I want to get in on the blog posting action!

So don't worry, those in Seattle, these pictures aren't Chicago or Detroit, but after tonight they could be, I suppose. The snow is really coming down, but it's beautiful and fluffy too.

Jon got these pictures as an email from someone at his work.

Stay warm, everyone! Give Molly a snuggle for us...

Molly is teething?!?!?!

Hey guys! We haven't posted new Molly pics in awhile so I thought I would get on that. So we think she might be teething! Oh no! We're not 100% sure & if she is she is crazy early. We got all concerned b/c she was really fussy for us this weekend. We called her doc & from her symptoms they think our little tyke might be cutting a tooth. However her fussiness has stopped even if the droll hasn't. ;) She may have just had the flu that I just got. Yuck! :-P I have to say I miss sick days (kinda hard to take a day off when you're a mom). Okay I'm going to finish posting these pics then take a nap. :)

Extra good-bits

This is mostly for Ian, but I'm getting a little HTML under my belt these days--thank the website I guess. In the last post, I used the <a href> </a> clause to display the link. There's, to my mind, nearly infinite ways to create a link, but the one I keep coming back to most often is this one and it allows the inclusion of an extra piece (target="_blank") which does something potentially VERY useful! - open another window.

When your link looks like this:

<a href="NAME OF SITE.COM" target="_blank">NAME YOUR LINK</a>

(just replace the name of side and the name of link with whatever you like--do this on the "edit html" tab of the blog window) then you've got a link to wherever you want that reads whatever you want AND it opens a brand new window.

Pretty schnazzy ;0

It's really weird that this is descried as an unsavory tactic, seems like most links to external sites can be handled this way--and when you put the default target to blank in the header BUT change internal links back to self to prevent new windows WITIHN a site...seems just plain smart. Anyway, I also had some fun finding a javascript media-player I hope you enjoy.

And, lastly, let me leave you with with "the album meme" should you want to create your own album covers such that currently gracing my recordings page.

Instructions:

1 - Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first random Wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.

2 - Go to Random quotations: http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.

3 - Go to flickr's "explore the last seven days" http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/
Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

Google-pages is fantastic!

As I was showing Dad at our belated Christmas, Google-pages is pretty neat.

I'm tickled pink that they'll host your website for FREE! The only downside is that you have a very - very lame domain name. Also, for those curious, I haven't seen an uptick in spam yet, and I'm fully google-able.

At the moment, my site has two sections, I've been creating a website to assist a bunch of new players in a league we're doing - when you've already done all the legwork for someone the game becomes just difficult to learn (instead of having Antarctic glacial cliff-like barriers to entry) instead of nigh impossible.

The other section is a (growing) collection of my low-fi covers of infinitely more famous recording artists. And to circle the wagons right back to Christmas, I'm using Laura's MP3 player to do the recordings (also a Christmas gift) - but most importantly the guitar Mom & Dad gave me. Thanks! And, enjoy

The raw stats

Just got back for taking lunchtime off to go with Liz to Molly's two month checkup. In case you are interested here are the stats for our big girl:

Weight: 13lbs 4oz (95th percentile)
Height: 23 1/2 inches (90th percentile)
Head: 15 3/4 inches (75th percentile)

I'm thinking either Volleyball frontline or WNBA power forward personally...

Not as camera happy as over Christmas, but I have taken a few new shots over the last week or so. I'll get them up and posted sometime this week.

Ian's paternity leave reading

Hey guys, I put this together for some of the other sci-fi / fantasy readers at my office, but I figured that I would share it here as well.

~Ian

Extras, by Scott Westerfeld

The first book that I read over break was to finish up the Uglies series. Steve recommended these to me, so you probably all know about them already. This final book was an ok finale to the end of the main trilogy. While I enjoyed the book I couldn’t shake the idea that this was a cash-in addendum to a popular series that had not been planned from the start. In addition, the characterization of some of the returning characters was a little lame to me.
Anyways, if you happen to not be familiar this is a young adult series that is dang fun to read at any age. It has cute themes (most of the books have an obvious Just So Stories moral about something like trust or friendship) with a pervasive original sci-fi bent. Extras was just alright but the series is still a favorite of mine.

Snake Agent, by Liz Williams

Now here is a good elevator pitch for a pulp novel, “World-weary Chinese detective (married to a demoness on the DL) travels to hell solve a series of bizarre murders with his demon partner.” And yes, while this is not high literature by any stretch of the imagination, I had fun with this novel and I’m looking forward to starting the next book in this series. To be honest, it really is just a pulp detective novel in structure, just with a very bizarre setting (think A Chinese Ghost Story) which I think appealed to me, since the usual film noir setting of most detective novels turns me right off.

The Terror, by Dan Simmons

As long as you have the time this would be my biggest recommendation out of the books I read. It is essentially the arctic survival tale of Ordeal By Ice by Farley Mowat crossed with an unnamed horror from a Stephen King novel. It’s a neat combo with all the goodies of both genres: ships sticking in ice, shadow shapes in the fog, dog sled expeditions, natives, bloody murders on the ice, incompetent leaders and cannibalism. It was something like 800 pages but I finished it in about two days, although the massive video game binge that I was coming off might have contributed to my speedy reading. Very good stuff.

Territory, by Emma Bull

Here is another odd concept for a book, a retelling of the story of the O.K. Corral shootout with hints of dark magic involved. I picked this up from an Amazon.com best-of list and felt that it was pretty solid. It’s much lighter than many of the other books that I read and even though there is plenty of death and dark magic its tone is always pretty joking / upbeat (think Firefly). I actually think that this has some pretty heavy romance elements to it and I think that I’m going to recommend it to Liz next. The only downside is a rather disjointed ending. I’m actually going to go back and reread the ending myself to see if I can make better sense of it this time. The disjointedness is especially odd to me as the rest of the book is quite straightforward.

...and now, new from the Wizarding community...

Here's the link to great pictures of the wizards I painted on commission for Bruce Hirst and Hirst Arts. He's got some great photos of the wizards on his game board, and at the bottom even some nice closeups of the minis themselves!

Yay!

our Christmas pics finally up!

I just got some last pictures from Jon's grandma, so here are some of the photos from our Virginia trip. They are all from Christmas morning; the first is Jon's (great uncle?) D.E. frying the oysters, and the rest are from our time at the theater, eating breakfast and watching the kids open gifts and read the Christmas story. There are a lot of pics of Jon playing the guitar with his cousin Aaron "helping." And the foam sword...well, it was a prop, so it appears in a lot of the photos!

Seattle Christmas 2007

I went a little crazy with my camera, as I am wont to do, but I narrowed the album down to just the 73 best shots. And Molly didn't seem to mind the camera flash (or the attention), so I enjoyed clicking, and I hope she enjoyed posing. For all they say about babies being self-centered, they aren't self-conscious in the way we adults are, so they don't really 'pose' at all, so Molly's expressions are refreshingly candid. Although Liz and Ian certainly weren't the center of attention this Christmas, we had a great time visiting with them, too!

Here's the link:
